Splitting a dinner tab used to mean chasing five friends across three payment apps. In iOS 26, Apple built the request-and-pay flow directly into group iMessage, so you can ask everyone in the thread to chip in without leaving the conversation. Here’s exactly how it works, who qualifies, and why everyone in the chat needs iOS 26 for it to appear.
What’s new in iOS 26
Apple Cash has let you send money one-to-one inside iMessage for years. The change in iOS 26 is that requests now work across an entire group chat. You can ask every participant to pay you back at once — to split a bill, pool money for a group gift, or settle up after a trip — and then track who has paid in the Wallet app. As of iOS 26 this group feature is available in the United States only.
Who can use it
- You must be 18 or older and a U.S. resident with Apple Cash set up in Wallet & Apple Pay.
- You need an Apple Account with two-factor authentication turned on and an eligible U.S. debit card on file (a credit card can’t fund Apple Cash sends).
- Every person in the group chat must be running iOS 26 or later. The Apple Cash option in a group only appears when the whole thread qualifies.
- It also works from iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro, not just iPhone.
That last requirement is the one that trips people up, so it’s worth its own section below.
Why everyone needs iOS 26
Group Apple Cash requests are rendered by the Messages app itself. If even one person in the thread is on iOS 25 or an Android phone (which shows up as a green-bubble SMS participant), the request either won’t send to the group or won’t display correctly for that person — and there’s no Apple Cash for non-Apple devices at all. If the Apple Cash button is missing from your group’s + menu, an out-of-date participant is the usual cause. Ask everyone to update in Settings > General > Software Update, or send individual one-to-one requests to anyone who can’t.
How to request money and split a bill
- Open the group conversation in Messages.
- Tap the + button to the left of the text field, then tap Apple Cash.
- Enter the amount you want each person to pay you back. Swipe up on the card for a full number pad if you need exact cents.
- Tap Request.
- Tap the blue Send button (↑) to post the request to the whole group.
Each member sees a card with a prominent Pay button, so they can settle up with a tap and Face ID. As people pay, you’ll see the status update, and completed transfers land in your Apple Cash balance in Wallet.
Request without a fixed amount
If people owe different amounts, tap + > Apple Cash > Request Without Amount before sending. Everyone gets the same request card but types in their own figure — handy when one friend had the steak and another just had a salad.
Send money instead of requesting it
The same menu works in reverse. Tap + > Apple Cash, enter an amount, choose the recipient from the group, and send. Use this to reimburse whoever fronted the cost, or to add your share to a group gift.
A worked example
Say four of you split a $180 dinner and you paid the whole check. Your share is $45, and each of the other three owes you $45.
- In your group chat, tap + > Apple Cash.
- Enter $45.00 and tap Request, then Send.
- Each friend taps Pay and confirms $45 — total collected: $135.
- Open Wallet to confirm all three payments arrived in your Apple Cash balance.
If you’d added a shared appetizer someone else covered, you’d use Request Without Amount so each person enters their adjusted total.
Fees and limits to know
Sending and receiving money between people is free. Fees only appear when you move your balance out of Apple Cash quickly. Here’s the current picture:
| Action | Cost / limit |
|---|---|
| Send or receive Apple Cash (person-to-person) | No fee (debit card or Apple Cash balance) |
| Funding a send with a credit card | Not allowed — debit card or balance only |
| Standard transfer to bank (ACH) | Free, 1–3 business days |
| Instant Transfer to debit card | 1.7% of the amount, min $0.25, max $25 (as of Feb 18, 2026) |
| Per-transaction send | $1 minimum, $10,000 maximum |
| Rolling 7-day send limit | $10,000 ($2,000 for Apple Cash Family / Tap to Cash) |
| Transfer to bank/debit limit | $4,000 per 7 days |
In short: splitting a bill costs nothing. You’d only pay 1.7% if you later chose the instant cash-out to your debit card rather than the free 1–3 day bank transfer.
Tracking who has paid
Open the Wallet app and tap your Apple Cash card to see the full activity list. Each incoming payment is tagged with the sender’s name, so you can spot at a glance who still owes. Requests that go unpaid stay visible in the group thread with an outstanding status until they’re settled or you cancel them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does everyone in the group really need iOS 26?
Yes. Group Apple Cash requests are a Messages feature, so every participant must be on iOS 26 or later on an Apple device. If the Apple Cash option doesn’t appear in your group’s + menu, someone in the thread is on an older version or isn’t using an iPhone/iPad — the most common reason the feature won’t show up.
Is there a fee to split a bill this way?
No. Sending and receiving money between people is free when funded by your Apple Cash balance or a debit card. A fee only applies if you use Instant Transfer to move your balance to a debit card (1.7%, min $0.25, max $25 as of February 18, 2026). The standard 1–3 day bank transfer is free.
Can I request different amounts from different people?
Yes. Choose Request Without Amount from the Apple Cash menu, and each person types in what they owe. This is ideal when the split isn’t even.
What if one friend has an Android phone?
Apple Cash isn’t available on Android, and a non-Apple participant turns the thread into an SMS group, which breaks the group request. Collect from that person another way — a separate app or cash — and use Apple Cash for the iOS 26 members.
The bottom line
iOS 26 turns any qualifying group iMessage into a lightweight bill-splitter: tap + > Apple Cash, set an amount (or leave it open), and let everyone pay you back with a tap. The one rule to remember is that the whole group must be on iOS 26 in the U.S. — get everyone updated and the rest is free and instant.
