Set Up Automatic Apple Cash Payments & Auto Reload in iOS 27 (and Cancel Them)

Apple Cash can run two kinds of “set it and forget it” money movements from the Wallet app: recurring payments that automatically send a fixed amount to a person on a schedule, and Auto Reload that tops up your Apple Cash balance from a linked debit card whenever it dips too low. In iOS 27 both features live in the same place they’ve been since iOS 17, so the steps below work whether you’re splitting rent with a roommate or making sure you never get declined at checkout.

This guide walks through setting up each one, shows worked examples with real 2026 numbers, and — just as importantly — shows exactly how to cancel or pause them.

Recurring payments vs. Auto Reload: what’s the difference?

People mix these up constantly, but they do opposite things. One sends money out to another person; the other pulls money in to your own balance.

Feature Recurring payment Auto Reload
What it does Automatically sends a set amount to a chosen person Adds money to your Apple Cash balance when it runs low
Money direction Out to a recipient In from your linked debit card
Trigger A schedule (weekly, biweekly, or monthly) Your balance falling below a minimum you set
Typical use Rent, shared internet, allowance, standing IOUs Keeping enough on hand for Apple Pay purchases
Cost Free between friends/family Free from a debit card

How to set up a recurring Apple Cash payment

Recurring payments send money to another Apple Cash user on a repeating schedule. Here’s the flow on iPhone:

  1. Open the Wallet app and tap your Apple Cash card.
  2. Tap the More button (the three dots, top right).
  3. Tap Recurring Payments, then New Recurring Payment.
  4. Add the recipient (from Contacts or by phone/email).
  5. Enter the dollar amount for each payment.
  6. Choose the start date and how often it repeats: Every Week, Every Other Week, or Every Month.
  7. Optionally add a memo (e.g., “Rent” or “Netflix share”), then confirm and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

Worked example

Say you owe your roommate $650 for rent on the 1st of each month. You’d set a recurring payment of $650, start date the 1st, frequency Every Month, memo “Rent.” On each due date, Apple Cash automatically sends $650 from your balance. If your balance is short, Apple Cash pulls the difference from your linked debit card to cover the send — which is exactly where Auto Reload can help you plan ahead.

One thing to watch: verified Apple Cash accounts can send up to $10,000 per transaction and $20,000 in a rolling 7-day window. Large recurring payments count against that weekly limit, so a big standing transfer plus other sends could hit the ceiling.

How to set up Apple Cash Auto Reload (low-balance top-up)

Auto Reload adds money to your Apple Cash card from a linked debit card whenever your balance falls below a threshold you choose, so you always have funds for Apple Pay purchases and sends.

On iPhone:

  1. Open Wallet and tap your Apple Cash card.
  2. Tap the More button, then Card Details.
  3. Tap Set Up Auto Reload.
  4. Set the amount to add and tap Minimum Balance to set the balance that triggers a reload.
  5. Confirm your payment method, then double-click the side button and authenticate to finish.

On iPad: Open SettingsWallet & Apple Pay → tap your Apple Cash card → Set Up Auto Reload, then follow the same prompts.

Worked example

You set the minimum balance to $20 and the reload amount to $50. You buy a $15 coffee run that drops your balance to $8 — below $20 — so Apple Cash automatically pulls $50 from your linked debit card, bringing you back to about $58. Reloading from a debit card is free; there’s no fee to add money this way.

How to cancel or pause recurring payments and Auto Reload

Both are easy to stop, and canceling takes effect before the next scheduled event.

Cancel or pause a recurring payment:

  1. Open Wallet → tap Apple CashMore.
  2. Tap Recurring Payments and select the payment you want to change.
  3. Tap Cancel Payment (or Pause) and confirm in the pop-up. Use Edit instead to change the amount, date, or frequency.

Cancel or edit Auto Reload:

  1. Open Wallet → tap Apple CashMoreCard Details (on iPad, Settings → Wallet & Apple Pay → Apple Cash).
  2. Tap Auto Reload, then tap Edit in the top right.
  3. Change the amount, minimum balance, or payment method — or turn Auto Reload off entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need money in my balance for a recurring payment to go through?

Not necessarily. If your Apple Cash balance can’t cover a scheduled send, Apple Cash draws the remaining amount from your linked debit card to complete it. Auto Reload is a good backup so the send comes from your balance instead.

What happens if my Auto Reload debit card is declined?

If the linked card can’t be charged, the reload fails and your balance simply won’t top up. Update the payment method under Auto Reload → Edit, and make sure the card is a valid, eligible U.S. debit card.

Can I pause a recurring payment without deleting it?

Yes. In Wallet → Apple Cash → More → Recurring Payments, select the payment and choose Pause. You can resume it later, or use Edit to adjust the amount or schedule rather than starting over.

Why did my Instant Transfer cost more than before?

Apple raised the Instant Transfer fee to 1.7% of the transfer amount (minimum $0.25, maximum $25) effective February 18, 2026. To avoid it, use the free standard bank transfer, which lands in one to three business days.

Wrapping up

Recurring Apple Cash payments handle the money you owe on a schedule, and Auto Reload keeps your balance ready so those sends and everyday Apple Pay purchases don’t stall. Both take under a minute to set up in Wallet, cost nothing to run, and can be paused or canceled from the same menus. Set your minimum balance a little above your typical spend, add a clear memo to each recurring payment, and check the schedule every few months so it still matches what you actually owe.
